Shelter Always provide free access to a field shelter or stable as they will need to be protected from rain and wind. A canopy is ideal as they love to look out. Muck out daily and provide clean bedding of straw or wood shavings. Feed Good quality hay and straw during winter months, less hay during spring and summer, it is very important NOT to overfeed your donkey. Some hard feed may be given if required. Clean water at all times and mineral or salt lick. Hoof Care and Grooming Pick out feet on regular basis and check for cracks or any sign of injury. The Farrier should trim the feet every 10 - 12 weeks. They love being groomed especially when malting during late spring. Bathe eyes and check over body. Worming Donkeys generally need worming every 12 weeks, your vet will be able to advise of suitable products for the area in which you live and time of year. Vaccines It is essential to vaccinate against tetanus, generally a yearly booster is needed. When buying a donkey, make sure the vaccinations are up to date. Passport and Papers The law now states that every donkey must have a passport, so never buy a donkey without one. It is also advisable for the donkey to be registered with the Miniature Mediterranean Donkey Association (MMDA) this should show his or her full pedigree which it vitally important to the future of the breed. You may like to join the association, you will find a link on this site. Social Habits Miniature Donkeys are very sociable animals and love attention, they should NEVER be kept alone, they need company, ideally with another donkey. They love human contact and are wonderful with children. They are very strong and can be trained to carry panniers or pull a small carriage.
